Clotho’s Handspinners Guild Meeting Minutes 
December 13, 2014

Next meeting:  January 17-18, 2015 (Annual Retreat); Manakin Fire Station

  1. Barbara has secured guild meeting dates for 2015 at Manakin Fire Station
    1. March 21st Meeting will not take place at fire station, it will take place at library (location to be announced)
    2. April 2015 Meeting will take place at Meadow Farm Museum
  2. January 2015 will be the 2 day retreat to take place on:
    1. January 17, 2015  10AM – 4PM (Pot Luck, bring a dish to share)
    2. January 18, 2015   1PM – 6PM
  3. The fiber challenge was discussed.  Since no one signed up to be responsible for the challenge this year it was suggested we give back.  This year’s challenge will be to create an item or items that will be donated to a particular organization/cause.  Creating can include but is not limited to knitting, spinning, crocheting, embroidering, felting, or weaving an item.  Items can be chemo caps, preemie hats, pet cozies, lap blankets etc. Prizes may be awarded for quantity knit, most colorful, most creative etc.  Rules and options will be given out at the January retreat.  Barbara will research organizations with respect to rules and regulations for created items.  In May the items will be judged then collected and given away to organizations agreed upon.

Clotho’s Handspinners Guild Meeting Minutes 
November 15, 2014

Next meeting:  December 13, 2014;  11am – 4pm; Manakin Fire Station

Judy Hinkes, substituting for Barbara, called the meeting to order.

Judy recognized new member, Laura and visitor, Michelle.

Secretary’s Report:  Minutes are posted on the website after each meeting.  Please review the minutes and let Debbie know of any corrections. 

It was brought to Judy’s attention that Clothos has not turned in an exhibitor form for the Powhatan Fiber Festival.  Treasurer, Nancy, volunteered to complete the form and submit with entry check.

The December Holiday Meeting and Potluck will be on Saturday, December 13 (the second Saturday of the month rather than the third Saturday) from 11AM – 4PM.
There will be a gift exchange for those who wish to participate.  Anyone choosing to participate in the exchange should bring a wrapped, $10, fiber related gift. 

The 2015 Retreat will be on Saturday, January 17 from 11AM – 4PM; and Sunday, January 18 from 1PM – 6PM.

There will be a sheep shearing at Sweet Tree Hill Farm in Cumberland, VA on November 25.  Thirty Shetland sheep will be sheared. Spectators are welcomed and there will be fleeces for purchase.  For directions or more information call 804-492-9593.







Clotho’s Handspinners Guild Meeting Minutes October 18, 2014
Next meeting:
November 20, 2014;  11am – 3pm; Manakin Fire Station

Meeting date for December has been confirmed with the fire station.  The December meeting will be on Saturday, December 13, which is the second Saturday of the month rather than the third Saturday.

Barbara Drake reported that we had a great turnout for the Fall Fiber Festival.  Barbara thanked the Skein and Garment Committee for their hard work and assistance with this year’s competition.  Each committee member was named along with their function on the committee.

Debbie Doran also extended an extra thanks to S&G Committee members and encouraged others to consider getting involved as volunteers for the 2015 event.

Members who had not paid dues were reminded that they are past due.  Those who have not paid by the end of this month will be removed from the mailing list.

New member: Tom Markwood, husband of Debbie.

Update on Clotho’s Officers:
Ann Vonnegut has agreed to continue as the Program Chairman
Alice Coppa has agreed to continue as Equipment  Chairman
Debbie Markwood volunteered to be the Secretary
Hana Beth Mullins volunteered to take the Hospitality position

Clotho's meeting minutes August 16, 2014
Library—11 new DVDs were purchased for the library with money from last month's sale of duplicate books.  If dues are current, you may check them out for 1 month.
Newsletter--When sending announcements to Judith for the newsletter (and eventually Debbie D.), type them up with the exact wording you'd like to appear so that Judith does not have to research each item and reword it.
Kristen has organized Clotho's Knitters Sept. 5 at Tuckahoe library (see newsletter for info.)
Plant fiber workshop--Sept. 6th 11AM-4PM; cost $40 (send payment to the Nancy D-H.)
Festivals:
Harvest Time Event at Booker T. Washington. Monument--Sept. 20th; volunteers needed to spin
Heritage Fest. in Prince Willian County.--Nov 1st from 10-3; volunteers needed.
Email Judith if you’re willing to help with either of these festivals.
New Kent Historical Society--volunteers possibly needed; Susan Q will follow up on this.

FFF Skein & Garment Competition.  Deadline for entries Sept 20th.  Write entry fee checks to FFF, not Clotho's.
Volunteers needed for FFF.  See Debbie D. to choose a 2 hr time slot; can get into the festival for free.
Volunteers really needed for the 4-5PM slot on Sat. to help cover the displays & bring in tables.
Board positions available--We had no nomination committee this year, please volunteer for one of the positions or nominate someone.  We need to fill--Library, Secretary, Workshops, Equipment, Program Coordinator. 
Anyone is welcome to set up a workshop at any time; do not need to be the Workshop Coordinator.
Tasha Tudor Day--Merrie Mill Farm, Aug. 31st.
Self Reliance Expo--Sept. 27th in Augusta Co.; spinners needed.
News Story--Amy Lacey, an anchor for Channel 8 news, would like to do a story on people who spin their pets’ fur.  Contact her if you'd like to be a part of the story. See newsletter for contact info.
Dye Day--Becky B. & Amy R. will host a dye day (at Amy's house) on Oct. 31st at 9AM.
Cost is $10; bring pre-mordanted fiber


Clotho’s meeting minutes July 19, 2014

Clotho’s Library—Barbara D. is currently sorting through the library materials categorizing by author, title, & primary subject.  She also sorted through VHS & DVDs; we have 16 VHS tapes.

Missing Spin-Offs—The library is missing Spin-Offs from Spring 1993, Fall 1994, & Winter 2012.  Let Barbara know if you have them checked out, or if you have an extra copy to donate.

Dues—Renewal begins at July meeting. September 1 is the deadline.

FFF Skein & Garment—The judges have been secured.  All committee members have been doing well in their positions. Check the FFF website for category entries.  The due date to submit entries is Sept. 20.  You may turn in items to the committee at Clotho’s meeting that day, Bring your item(s) in a plain brown wrapper.

Meeting dates—All meetings through Nov. will be at the Manakin Fire Station.

Workshop—Rachel C-L. is organizing a plant fiber workshop (kudzu, wisteria, dogbane, & nettle).  There was a brief meeting about it after the July business meeting.  If interested, sign up w/ Rachel.



Clotho’s meeting minutes June 21, 2014

Judging & prizes for the Fiber Challenge.  The members voted in favor of using comment sheets with the judging.

Sheep to Shawl will be 2nd Sat. in Apr.  The scarf from Sheep to Shawl 2014, spun by Clotho’s members, dyed with indigo by Becky B. at Meadow Farm’s Harvest Festival, woven by Bob H. is on our show and tell table.

Christmas party 2014 will be Dec. 13th or 20th; still waiting for a date confirmation.  All other months have been secured at the Fire Station.

Elections are coming; see the President if interested in a position.

Joanna has resigned as Librarian.  Barbara, the President currently has the library to inventory, index & alphabetize.  If you’re interested in the Librarian position, and come to meetings regularly, let Barbara know.  There was discussion about putting all info. on an excel sheet to keep track of the books and who has checked them out.

Library videos—Many of the videos are current on VHS.  The President wants to invest in CDs for the library.  If anyone has experience in converting VHS to CD, let Barbara know.

Business cards—a suggestion was made to print more cards (1000 double-sided on recycled paper for $40). Kristina P. said she will do it.

Clotho’s App—Kristina P. asked whether members would like a free Clotho’s app for things such as the library list & messaging.  It would be private for members only.  Judith T. will continue this year with  Debbie D.’s help. Debbie will be training as the new communications person.



Clotho’s meeting minutes, March 15, 2014

Skein & Garment—A committee was formed to do the S&G competition for FFF (about 10 members).  Judy H. & Beth H. made a manual for job descriptions, duties, timeline, etc.

Powhatan Festival of Fiber(Apr. 26th)—Need volunteers at the demo tent (spinning, carding, etc.)  Can sign up for 2 hour increments.

Meadow Farm (Apr 5th)—If bringing a wheel, you may drop it off near the tent at 11AM. Event is open to the public from noon – 4:00.

Longwool Workshop—May 31st & June 1st w/ Becky B.; spinning long wool rare breeds.  It will be at St. Joseph’s Villa.  Fees will cover FFF donation.

Fleece washing—Apr. 18th at Becky’s; 10AM.

Auction—May 17th; 11AM-4PM.  Judy H.will post on Ravelry.

June meeting—Fiber challenge & potluck.

Need to check w/ Café Press for T-shirts.



Clotho’s meeting minutes January 19, 2014

March date change—The March meeting will be moved to the 29th

Meadow Farm—Apr. 5th, in place of our regular meeting.

Auction—The auction will be May 17th at the fire station.  Will have a flyer next month.

Fiber Challenge—Rachel C-L. is heading the fiber challenge.  Projects are due at the June potluck meeting.  An adjustment to the rules has been made—you need to use ½ oz of a luxury or exotic fiber, not 1 oz.

Workshop—Becky B. will be doing a workshop on longwool rare breeds; will be based on the Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook.  There will be a pre-workshop day for washing fleece (TBD).

Hospitality—Debbie M. will be taking this over.

FFF Skein & Garment—We need someone to chair this.  One idea is that it could be a larger committee and the jobs could be split.  Kathy B. will be our voice at the FFF committee meetings.

Member donation—The guild is making a $300 donation to the Jacobs family for their daughter who is seriously ill.

Judith T. is being honored for her botanical illustration at the U. S. Botanical Garden on February 15. The exhibit will remain on view until mid-June. 

Powhatan Festival—Clotho’s will have a tent.  If you’d like to volunteer, email powhatanfestivaloffiber@msn.com
